WPPA – Template or Plugin?

I’ve been getting some feedback lately on my WordPress Photo Album template. It seems that different WordPress themes use different code, and it’s not as simple as adding get_header(), get_footer() and an optional get_sidebar(). So although a template is a more simple solution, and if you’re familiar enough with HTML and a bit of PHP you can customize it to match the rest of your site, the average WordPress user seems to find it a bit complicated, so I’m considering making it into a plugin, where you just need to add a simple tag in a page, and it will display the album.

Feedback would really be appreciated.

Also if you have any feature requests for WPPA, please write about them in your comment.

I like your WP Photo Album template but I do agree that it’s a little tricky to understand and work with.

I have a lot of HTML and PHP experience but I do fall into the average Word Press user category.

I think having a plugin version would be great but still have the template version as well. I would suggest making the instructions a little more user friendly and tone them down a bit for the non technical users.

    Keep up the good work!

In my opinion, it really needs to be a plugin. I really like the idea, and having seen it work on this site, I would love to use it on mine. However I’m currently having difficulties getting it to work (me being a dunce, that is), but feel that if it was a plugin the installation would be a lot easier.

Yep, I think it should be a plugin. You could have an options page then, which would be handy. I’d like to help you write it, too, because this is so close to being my ideal photo gallery plugin. I like that it uses wordpress pages & custom fields (so we get things like comments for free).

While I’m grappling with the template (which is working when I can get my head around it) I like the sound of a plugin, easier to use and more integrated into wordpress’ interface.

I think it´s a great template, but i agress that it should be a plugin aswell.
    Keep up the good work.

I think this would be great as a plugin! I’m looking for just this thing, and may try your template to see how it works (while waiting for a plugin (; ).

It’s a little hard, but there is not need to become a plugin, maybe is need a better tutorial…

I would live to see this as a plug in!

Yeah! Nice work! I agree on possibly making better documentation á la wp-codex.
The customisation is much easier not having a plugin, though. I’ll add the “lightbox” feature in …probably 5 minutes, now when I’ve looked at the code, and I’m not very good with anything wp or php.
I’d go for core files with massive documentation and commenting.
