Some Site Statistics
Some time ago, I signed up to Google Analytics, the other night I checked my site's statistics, and here is what I found:
General Statistics
Browsers
Thats always the most interesting thing, which browsers do your visitors use? here are the stats for this site: So, the majority of this site's visitors (50.33%) have chosen FireFox, next is Internet Explorer, with only 33.89%. Good, but not good enough. guys, Stop using Internet Explorer! No. 3 is the favorite browser of the mac users, Safari, with 12.13%. Under 2% are Opera, Mozilla, Camino and Konqueror.Operating Systems
Sadly, windows is still leading this one with 79.07%, Mac is second with 17.11% and weirdly enough, Linux only has 3.82%.Connection Speed
80.4% have some sort of broadband connection (cable or DSL) 10.47% have dialup (Much more that I thought) and the rest have corporate or 'unknown' connections.Screen Resolutions
The leading resolution, with 40.2% of visitors, is 1024x768. no. 2 is 1280x1024 with 22.76% followed by 1680x1050 (8.47%) and 1280x800 (5.98%). under the 5% mark are 1440x900 (3.49%), 1152x864 (3.16%), 1600x1200 (2.49%), 1280x768 (2.33%), 800x600 (1.99%) and 1280x854 (1.83%).Outdated Stuff
Another thing that interested me was if there's still a point in designing for IE 5, using web-safe colors and limiting the designs to 800px.Screen Resolutions
Less then 2% of this sites visitors have a 800x600 resolution, so while I think that those visitors need to be kept in mind, less important stuff, like a right sidebar, can be put outside the traditional 800 pixel limit.Older Browsers
Internet Explorer 5 got 0.49% of the Internet Explorer Visitors to this site which are only 36.29% of total visits to this site. Netscape didn't even register once! so no hassle with outdated browsers and their quirks for me.Screen Colors
Is using web-safe colors still important? well, not for my site. 90.2% use 32-bit monitors, 5.32% have a 16-bit monitor, and 4.32% use a 24-bit monitor. not even one 8-bit registered. web-safe colors are officially dead. All the above stats can be found in any old stats tool, the real good stuff in Google Analytics is stuff like what links were clicked and the bounce rates, but I'll save that stuff for another post. - April 18th, 2006
Now using windows friendly ZIP’s
Thanks to CleanArchiver, I updated the WP theme ZIP downloads and now they are windows friendly. meaning, they don't Include any of the hidden files included in the folder on my mac, so when unzipping on windows, you don't see lots of files you shouldn't be seeing. - January 14th, 2006

New WordPress themes page
I just added a page for WordPress themes I make, so far I've got No Probs and Greenery. I'm currently working on Leaves and my own X Blog (with some cool new additions and features). Visit my WP themes page here: /web/wpthemes/ - January 6th, 2006

Upgraded to WP 2
After testing WordPress 2.0 on my test server, (my iBook ;) ) I upgraded this site to WordPress 2. while playing around with it, I tweaked the theme's code a bit, and now a few things, like the sidebar, forward/backward links and a few more have a smoother look. while I was at it, I also enabled Permalinks. so now the URL's look nicer, and Google likes them better :). Update: Today (wed) I tweaked the theme even more, got rid of the stupid info box, and put recent posts and RSS feeds there. - January 3rd, 2006

Happy Chanukah & Updates
Have a Happy Chanukah, or whatever...
Some Updates
Have a Happy Chanukah, or whatever...Some Updates
- X-Blog theme - Well, I've been working on a Port, and it's 90% done, but the problem is that i get tired of it very fast, so I was thinking of maybe changing the theme every month. but on the other hand, a site should keep the same design as long as possible, so I might just leave this theme with some improvements & a new color scheme.
- Photo Album Page - I've yet to find something both good and simple to use and setup, with no extra features, so soon i'll begin work on a WP Photo Album plugin/page template
- New AppleScript coming soon - to perfectly fix the date & time of creation for photos that were taken on a camera who's clock wasn't set correctly (iv'e got some photos from 1904 on my computer!!!, this will fix them.)
X Blog?
I'm thinking about moving this sites template to the X Blog design, which I designed and posted at OSWD.org (actually now openwebdesign.org), even though I love the design of this site (hey, I wouldn't use it if I didn't like it...) I was looking at it the other day with the full quality images (the version on oswd and owd has reduced quality images because there's a 25kb image size limit) and it's actually not that bad... so i'd like my site have a design made by me... so i'll probably be changing it. Edit: OK, it's probably gonna happen, cause I just notices that Michael of WordPress Station has finished making the X Blog WP template based on my design, so less work for me ;) you can download the X Blog WP theme Here. - December 6th, 2005

WordPress, A Perfect CMS
I've been looking for a good CMS to manage the content of my site, and none that seemed good enough, were easy to skin, but then i got this idea that i could use WordPress, the popular blogging system, as a general CMS. WordPress can create standalone pages as well as blog posts, and with a little editing of the template, i got rid of all the blog-ish stuff on the standalone page template (like the edit page link) and the pages look as good as any static page. Importing the blogger blog post was pretty easy, as WordPress comes with a Blogger importer, but for some reason, the dates all got reset to 1 Jan 1970. While I was at it, i changed the design to a theme by Andreas Viklund posted at OSWD. - July 28th, 2005
